Shelter
In early 2004, my husband and I decided we needed to think in radical new directions if we were going to realize our dreams of home ownership. The widely accepted method of saving money, building credit and begging the bank for a loan, just wasn’t in harmony with our anti-establishment rebel temperaments. So I began researching alternative methods of home ownership that were more inline with our pioneering spirits. And that’s how our journey toward self reliant living began. As I formulated a plan for our escape from the “American Dream”, I kept 3 criteria in mind; Our new home had to be mortgage free, energy efficient and easy to live in.
Food
Last summer, my husband bit into his first home-grown strawberry and said, “This is the best strawberry I’ve ever had.”. I couldn’t tell you if it was the freshness, the lack of chemicals or the fact that I grew it, that made it so good to him, but it was enough to get me hooked on organic gardening for life. In case you haven’t guessed already, I’m no Master Gardener. I am however, an avid learner and fearless experimenter. I hope you will join me on my journey toward food self-reliance. Together we can explore the possibilities and share insights about organic gardening, food preservation and animal husbandry.
Health
Pharmaceutical companies spend millions of dollars on television ads trying to convince us that this new drug or that is the answer to all our problems. And every happy episode ends with a laundry list of “possible side effects”. My husband and I often watch, amazed at their audacity. Do they really believe that people are that foolish, to risk their lives by jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire? Apparently people are, because these companies make billions of dollars every year. I suppose the plan is to saturate us with this information until we’re numb to the threat. My father was a doctor and a wise man. He once told me that the human body has an amazing ability to heal itself, if we just give it a chance.
